Project · Self-hosted infrastructure
Homelab
A complete infrastructure on a small server with 8 GB of RAM – cloud storage, ad filtering, smart home and logging that reports attacks.
Setup
On a Proxmox host, the services run in separate LXC containers: Nextcloud for files, calendars and contacts, Pi-hole as a DNS filter for the whole network, Homebridge to bring devices without HomeKit support into Apple Home, and a Docker host for everything else, managed through Git-backed Portainer stacks.
Logging on little RAM
Graylog or Elastic would realistically have needed 3–4 GB of RAM – not acceptable on this host. Instead, Vector collects logs from Proxmox, all containers, the Raspberry Pi and the FRITZ!Box and writes them to OpenObserve. Around 255 MB of RAM at idle for both.
Failed logins on SSH and Nextcloud go to a separate stream kept for 180 days and trigger an alert via Telegram. A small Python tool also monitors the internet connection layer by layer – link, DNS, routing, HTTP – so it is clear where the problem is during an outage.
